Job Overview

An Orientation & Mobility Specialist plays a vital role in empowering visually impaired students to navigate their environments safely, efficiently, and independently. In this school-based role, you will conduct specialized evaluations to assess spatial awareness and mobility skills, designing tailored instructional plans that help students master independent travel techniques within school buildings, home settings, and broader community spaces.

Working closely with educational teams, you will teach fundamental navigation concepts, including cane techniques, route planning, and spatial orientation.

Job Details

• Job Title: Orientation & Mobility (O&M) Specialist

• Setting: School-Based

• Schedule: Part-Time, 1-2 hours/week

• Contract Length: 2026-2027 School Year

• Candidate Type: Local and traveler friendly

• Preferred: School-based experience preferred.

• Requirements: ACVREP Orientation & Mobility Certification (COMS) and valid West Virginia state credentials required.

Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive orientation and mobility evaluations to assess students' spatial awareness, travel skills, and environmental navigation.

• Provide direct instruction in safe, independent travel techniques across school, home, and community environments.

• Teach concepts related to spatial orientation, cane skills, route planning, and environmental cues tailored to visually impaired students.

• Collaborate with teachers, parents, and TVIs to support safe navigation and access within educational settings.

• Participate in IEP meetings, contribute to functional travel goal development, and maintain compliant progress reports.
